DATE SOLD: 2011-10-16
LOT#: 1102-961

DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham 23J Premier Maximus with winding indicator, 16S bridge model 1908, 14K solid gold OF original Wadsworth HB&B RR style case, SW-SS, NOS WED (frequently referred to as "glass" dial for its quality level) with sunken center, seconds and double-sunk WI (therefore "quadruple sunk"), along with metal Maximus dial original to the watch, fully capped lever escapement, internally jeweled motor barrel, GJS with full bridge caps for 4th wheel & escape, DES on all three escapement elements, simple concentric pattern banded NI damascene, mvt s#17057058, number 58 of the second run, the 258th produced. The watch comes from the original family, who acquired a new old stock Premier Maximus dial (due to condition of the original dial) for presentation at auction. A family member writes, "The Waltham Premier Maximus 17057058 belonged to Everett Kounce, grandson of Francis Koontz, (born in Lorraine, France, who came to the US at age 21 and later fought in the Civil War). Everett was a motorcycle trick rider who rode under the name Jack Early. He never had children, but was a favorite among his nephews and nieces because he would let them ride in the sidecar of his motorcycle when he came to visit. He gave this watch to my mother, his niece, sometime in the 1940's and she has kept it in a box ever since then. As Jack Early, he traveled the Midwest and California. His motorcycle tricks included riding in a huge drum laid on its side, forward and back, up one side and then back up the other side, until he had enough speed and momentum to go all the way back around. He would make several loops, and then slow down to go forward and back until he could stop. As a child I was amazed to see a motorcycle go upside down without falling. I suspect that the slowing down was the more dangerous part of the trick. Another of his tricks was to ride through a wall of fire. The last time he did this trick, a piece of board got stuck in his wheel and he was badly burned and hospitalized for several months. Sometime after that, Uncle Everett lived and worked on a ranch in northern California. At one time, he and the rancher traveled the country and took photographs which they put in a calendar and sold. For years he rode a horse in the Rose Bowl Parade. He died in California in 1957
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good poise, near mint plates show hardly any MFS, near mint slots & settings with hardly any marring, no oxide on bright work, hardly any on winding wheels; WE dial is NOS and perfect; the original metal dial sold with the lot has light tarnish, some minor spots or microspeckle, scoring in the WI, bezel rub, stain at 4, but is original and unaltered; hands in mint blue, the minute a bit large for the original hour hand, the WI hand chosen to be as close to original and matching color as possible, as the original had been lost; original heavy gauge case shows fairly substantial overall even wear, fine polish from fresh buffing, some MFS and slipped knife marks on cuvette and back, no dents or dings; bow original and worn thinly but evenly, replacement crown selected to be useful but show wear in keeping with the case, since the original crown, provided in the canister, was smooth and made further winding difficult; good glass crystal; excellent internal condition, honest external wear from years of use, provided with both NOS glass dial and its original dial and well-worn crown for the collector to maintain the history and originality while having a mint dial and functional crown to enjoy; as with many of the later series, the original case was selected by the buyer; it is a myth that Premier MaximUS Watches were "always" in the Maximus signed case, and in this situation the family history serves as further confirmation, aside from the scarcity of the solid gold RR style case
PRICE SOLD: $5,000

LOT#: 1401-338

DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham 23J Premier Maximus with winding indicator, 16S bridge model 1908, 14K solid gold OF original Wadsworth HB&B RR style case, SW-SS, NOS WED (frequently referred to as "glass" dial for its quality level) with sunken center, seconds and double-sunk WI (therefore "quadruple sunk"), along with metal Maximus dial original to the watch, fully capped lever escapement, internally jeweled motor barrel, GJS with full bridge caps for 4th wheel & escape, DES on all three escapement elements, simple concentric pattern banded NI damascene, mvt s#17057058, number 58 of the second run, the 258th produced. The watch came from the original family, who acquired a new old stock Premier Maximus dial (due to condition of the original dial) for presentation at auction. A family member wrote, "The Waltham Premier Maximus 17057058 belonged to Everett Kounce, grandson of Francis Koontz, (born in Lorraine, France, who came to the US at age 21 and later fought in the Civil War). He died in California in 1957." Sold in our galleries in 2011.
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good poise, near mint plates show hardly any MFS, near mint slots & settings with hardly any marring, no oxide on bright work, hardly any on winding wheels; WE dial is NOS and perfect; the original metal dial sold with the lot has light tarnish, some minor spots or microspeckle, scoring in the WI, bezel rub, stain at 4, but is original and unaltered; hands in mint blue, the minute a bit large for the original hour hand, the WI hand chosen to be as close to original and matching color as possible, as the original had been lost; original heavy gauge case shows fairly substantial overall even wear, fine polish from fresh buffing, some MFS and slipped knife marks on cuvette and back, no dents or dings; bow original and worn thinly but evenly, replacement crown selected to be useful but show wear in keeping with the case, since the original crown, provided in the canister, was smooth and made further winding difficult; good glass crystal; excellent internal condition, honest external wear from years of use, provided with both NOS glass dial and its original dial and well-worn crown for the collector to maintain the history and originality while having a mint dial and functional crown to enjoy; as with many of the later series, the original case was selected by the buyer; it is a myth that Premier MaximUS Watches were "always" in the Maximus signed case, and in this situation the family history serves as further confirmation, aside from the scarcity of the solid gold RR style case.

LOT#: 1402-30

DESCRIPTION: APW - World's Colombian Exposition, Chicago 1893 pocket watch, US Watch Company, unique 18S Solidarity Warranted 14K US Assay solid gold false box-hinged recased HC, the decorative box elements set with crystal roundels, actually "stanhopes" or optical jewels showing four views of the Chicago Exhibition and Columbian Exposition when the eye is brought right up to the tiny lens and looked through from the front of the watch, SW-LS, WE-SSD, lever escapement, 15J, concentric pattern NI damascene, s#96361. Gross weight of assembled watch 91.2 dwt (141.8 g). The covers are further decorated with engravings of Columbus raising standard and sword, the Santa María, and crosses. The stanhope was named after Charles, the third Earl of Stanhope, who invented the Stanhope lens, later modified by photographer René Dagron as a means of showing microfilm images after seeing the first exhibited by John Benjamin Dancer in Paris. Dagron later was awarded the first microfilm patent, having adapted Stanhope's invention to the easy display of tiny images imbedded in objects. The present watch shows three exhibition buildings of the Chicago Exhibition (another name for the same event) and the Gallery of Fine Arts of the Columbian Exposition. There are very few stanhope watches to be found of any type, and one wonders if the present watch was among the displays. The mvt is apparently not original to the case, having two error marks from installation without stem, but also two other shadows that show evidence of a different mvt being in the case. The case itself is unaltered and original as made. Comes with protective pocket-holder.
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, excellent mvt condition overall, light plate cloudiness; dial with hls at 4, in seconds, and above center; hands near mint but of mixed styles; case shows hardly any wear, some MFS, no dents or dings; the front latch is a bit worn, allowing the watch not to always remain closed, adjustment needed; plated bow now brassy but little worn, crown shows very light wear; good glass crystal.
PRICE SOLD: $5,400
