DESCRIPTION: EPW - Touchon & Co, Swiss, made by Agassiz, "R. Hemsley's Canadian Railway" and "Grade A" marked mvt, 24J, 50mm, gold-filled OF original Canadian made A.W.C.Co. Fortune case with "Presented to J.H. Conover by The Martin Senour Co. Ltd. 1908" engraved to rear, "Agassiz Geneva" marked white enamel DS dial, mvt is marked Agassiz under its dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, capped fourth wheel, capped third wheel, diamond endstone, 24J, wolf's tooth winding, fishscale pattern nickel damascene, s#118078. A terrific item for the collector of high grade Swiss railroad watches, this is the first example of a 24 jewel Swiss-made watch for North American railway service we have encountered. This particular movement is pictured in the 1996 "Railroad Timekeeping" booklet by Jim Hernick that was based on the exhibit in that year's NAWCC Seminar. This watch features an interesting combination of branding with the Touchon signed movement and the Agassiz signed dial, but removal of the dial reveals a corresponding Agassiz marking to the movement's dial plate. R. Hemsley's firm was located at 255-257 St. James Street in Montreal, and advertised "We are Official Watch Inspectors for all Railroads running into Montreal" as seen in the October 29th, 1903 advertisement from "The Montreal Star" which is included in our photos with this lot. The Martin Senour Co. was a paint manufacturer in Montreal; J.H. Conover was a long time employee of the firm and by the 1920s is noted in periodicals as its general manager. From the collection of J.D. Unruh.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, patch of abrasion and damascene loss to crown wheel bridge in space past "Adjusted," some fine scratches to left side of ratchet wheel bridge, few lesser fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere, mild oxide to steelwork; dial with very faint hl above seconds-register, infinitesimal pinpoint nick to inner edge of outer chapter at 4, minor edge rub under bezel; excellent hands, mild bend to seconds-hand; case shows ample wear, deep circular scratch within rear likely caused by a case screw scraping at some time in the past, no dents or dings, reduced engraving detail but remains legible, large portion of band is worn through to brass, few spots of wear to brass to pendant; tight bow, crown shows substantial wear; good glass crystal.
PRICE SOLD: $1,300

DATE SOLD: 2023-07-20
LOT#: 230720-201

DESCRIPTION: EPW - Vacheron & Constantin (our attribution), signed as "Merimont Watch Co., Swiss," 44mm, heavy platinum OF original A.W.C.Co. case, refinished silvered dial with applied gold signature plaque for retailer Shreve, Treat & Ecret, applied gold numerals and indices, SW-SS, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, 18J, wheel satin nickel finish, s#3378356. Gross weight of assembled watch 37.1 dwt (57.8 g). We believe the present movement to have been a product of Vacheron & Constantin as the Merimont Watch Co. name was first registered in 1917 in Geneva, then registered under American Watch Case Co of New York in 1918, and finally registered under Vacheron & Constantin in 1928. An ad in the Jeweler's Circular of May 4, 1921, shows ladies' platinum and diamond bracelet watches, the cases made by American Watch Case Co, and the mvts by Merimont Watch Co, with the byline "Every Merimont Movement enshrines a century and a half of experience," a reference to the beginnings of Vacheron & Constantin in 1775. We believe the present movement's serial number represents a simple addition of a leading "3" digit as prefix to Vacheron & Constantin's typical serial sequence, and this is consistent with other Merimont Watch Co. marked watches we have encountered. From the collection of Ethan Lipsig.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, mild toning of plate surfaces, very small marring tight around stem detent screw, plates with few micro-fine scratches; refinished dial is cosmetically excellent; excellent hands; case shows hardly any wear, rear with some fine to micro-fine scratches and few areas of mild abrasion around rear perimeter, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail, circular finish to rear remains fully intact; bow pivots freely, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystal.
