[2 to 15] PW mvts: Fourteen assorted mvts as pictured, various makers with majority being American, all but one with dials present, numerous missing hands, three run (Waltham Model 1857 stemwind, E. Howard & Co. Series IV, and Philadelphia Watch Co. s#10223), eleven are NR and include a number of pieces that are incomplete and/or in stages of disassembly with components missing as pictured; an interesting assortment with some unusual items including an early 21J Illinois private label (plates are present but most else is missing), a keywind movement signed to James Turner of Providence, RI that we believe is of European origin and made in imitation of Waltham 10S design, and a Lancaster "Melrose" grade. DESCRIPTION: Auburndale Watch Co counter set with original box, set of two game counters with box marked for William B. Fowle who was the primary investor and eventual president of Auburndale Watch Co., both counters are white metal and measure 46mm diameter, both with a central hand that is manually set as desired and with a push button that advances a digital display at bottom with one counter tallying in base-10 numbering system and the other in base-6 numbering system, this style of game counter was assigned US patent number 276101 which was registered on April 17th, 1883 to "William A. Wales, of Boston, Massachusetts, Assignor to the Auburndale Watch Company, of same place" and a copy of the patent document is included with our photos of this lot. An obscure and very rarely seen bit of American horological associated history, this item makes for a phenomenal companion piece to an Auburndale watch or to a collection of Auburndale watches.
CONDITION: Counters with good function and in excellent cosmetic condition overall; box with some tattering and wear as pictured, top label with some loss at right side but all text remains intact.

DESCRIPTION: Lot (3) Auburndale Watch Co. items; a rare group for the collector of all things Auburndale, from the estate of Brian Cavanaugh - [1] Timer, 10-minute Timer with 1/4-second jump, stop and start function operated via turning the crown, reset function operated via depressing the crown, 5J, 18S, HC style mvt in sidewinder orientation in chrome-plated base metal OF original case, case shows medium wear, profuse micro-fine scratches, sizable portions of chrome loss, white enamel dial with numerous hls to its lower portion, one hl at upper-left, winding tab on mvt, lever escapement with upright pins on the escape wheel engaging contours in the unjeweled lever, satin nickel finish, s#1166, running, frequently failing to stop as hacking spring is often passing above plane of balance wheel, reset is incomplete, overhaul needed, comes as pictured with an instruction tag which includes instructions on one side for split-second function which the present timer does not possess. [2] Thermometer with "Auburndale Watch Co." marked dial, within octagonal wooden frame with gilt paint, measures approximately 13.5 inch diameter, untested as to function, fine cosmetic condition overall, paper dial with some spotting, internal wooden surround with a split at lower-left, octagonal frame with areas of paint loss. [3] Thermometer with "Auburndale Mass" marked dial, gold-filled and small sized to be worn as a fob on a watch chain, thermometer dial measures approximately 20mm diameter, untested as to function, excellent cosmetic condition overall, some wear to brass around portions of edges; a rare piece and the only example of this small fob style Auburndale thermometer this cataloger recalls having seen.

CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good timer function, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered fine scratches and mild surface nicks; nearly flawless dial with few minuscule flakes to rims of hand holes; nearly mint hands, mild upward bend to tail of sweep-seconds-hand; case shows hardly any wear, ding to rear left of center, ding to band near 35-second position of dial, some scattered nicks; tight bow, crown shows very little wear; glass crystal with few small scratches.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Auburndale Watch Co, Rotary, 4J, 19S, nickel OF display recase, white enamel dial, SW-LS, club tooth lever escapement with steel pallets, nickel-plated mvt, s#361. A rare piece, the Auburndale Rotary was originally marketed for $10 in 1877 and represents a very innovative attempt at manufacturing an inexpensive but reasonably accurate watch. The design of the Rotary is based on patents by Jason R. Hopkins that are listed on the movement's fixed gear plate. This unique movement style features a full rotation of the mechanism every approximately 2.5 hours, with this motion operating off what one would traditionally call the third wheel pinion on the internal teeth of a virtual fixed second wheel plate. The mainspring is concealed between lower back plate and dial plate, the lower back plate being caused to rotate by the spring pressure. Watch is wound by turning the crown in the reverse direction and does not have provision for winding "coast" (turning of the crown in the other direction).
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, few fine scratches, numerous micro-fine scratches, small bits of finish loss at edges of balance cock; dial with scattered hls; fine hands; case shows light wear, overall tarnish, some scattered nicks, band with empty screw positions at 4 and 8 indicating this case likely originally held a removable inner ring allowing option for its use with 16S mvts; tight bow, crown shows light wear; good glass crystals.

CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, nickel finish with excellent bright tone and is substantially intact with only a very small bit loss at the inner portion of the third wheel bridge, some mild fine and micro-fine scratches; dial with hls near 10:30 and 1:30; near mint hands; case shows little wear, spot of discoloration on bezel next to lip, no dents or dings; tight bow, crown shows light wear; good glass front crystal, rear glass crystal has a tiny edge chip.

The mainspring is concealed between lower back plate and dial plate, the lower back plate being caused to rotate by the spring pressure. A variety of patents are listed from 1875 to 1877 on the fixed internally geared plate.
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, not winding but only slipping on the winding gears, setting properly, but the good news is that the mvt shows good balance motion & poise with pressure applied to the (so-called) third wheel, good mvt condition overall with light plating wear around the Auburndale Rotary signature; dial perfect; hands good with light oxide only; recase with newly filed lever slot fits the mvt well, shows little wear, some MFS, no dents or dings; bow tight, crown shows light wear; good glass crystals.

CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good balance motion, good poise, for about 1/4 of the rotation of the escape wheel the escapement sounds out of beat, but this anomaly vanishes with pressure applied to the train, so there must be some dirt in the train; otherwise, plates show some patchy cloudiness, limited spots, faint fingerprint etching, a few MFS and a long FS, good slots & cap setting, tiny edge oxide on bright work; dial perfect but for faint hl under seconds and tiny hl outside chapter at 57 seconds; hands in good blue, slight rubbing or dulling; original medium gauge case with nickle cuvette shows light wear, some MFS, FS and scratches, numerous light dents or dings; bow good, push shows light wear; good glass crystal; a truly scarce American model
