DESCRIPTION: EPW - John Belling, Bodmyn (Bodmin, England, dates from 1680 to 1761 and beyond for descendants), sun and moon dial fusee, 56mm, coin silver OF original pair cases bearing London hallmarks, maker's mark "WB" but no date letter, KWKS, silver champleve dial with half-circle aperture for 24-hour disk with sun or moon image indicating hours on scale from 6 to 12 to 6, the minute hand indicating normal (12-hour) minutes on the 60 minute outer chapter, verge escapement, gilt mvt with silvered pierced & engraved foliate scrolled balance cock, without number, circa 1730; with paper from C Hutton, Burslem, depicting siren with anchor, and instructions on regulation
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good escapement function, plates show good gilding, silvering beginning to wash off, little oxide on steel components; dial fine original with even patina; hand with a little oxide; original outer case shows medium even wear, light tarnish, some MFS, no dents, hardly any dings; button latch good with good top; original inner case shows less wear, few MFS, no dents or dings; bow & pendant most likely replaced at end of 18th century; good domed glass crystal; Belling was best known for his desirable lantern clocks
