DATE SOLD: 2015-05-03
LOT#: 1501-191

DESCRIPTION: EPW - Continental gold verge fusee with multicolor gold dial, 44mm, 18K OF original consular case with hunting back, gold fixed cuvette engraved, "Feb 14, 1827," KWKS, solid gold dial with multicolor gold appliqués and applied gold numerals against a stippled field, verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled two-footed balance bridge, s#29433 with matching number inside case-back, together with period cast key, all circa 1820-30. Gross weight of assembled watch 38.3 dwt (59.6 g). Purchased by the present consignor from the May, 2014 sale. An early tag recorded the family tradition as having belonged to "Grandmother Wheeler," along with some history of this old and very well preserved Boston estate. From the initials on the back and the history in hand, we can confirm that the watch was probably first presented to Alice Shepherd Winship (Palmer), wife of George Palmer (1787-1855), both of South Boston, on the 13th birthday of their daughter Alice Shepherd Palmer (later Wheeler) which was as well St Valentine's Day, an old romantic tradition originating with Chaucer's poetry of the 14th century and kept alive in Shakespeare. The coincidence of birthday and romantic holiday would have been a very special occasion for presentation by husband to wife of an important gift as her daughter came of age. The daughter's initials came to match her mother's only upon her marriage to Benjamin Wheeler Jr. in 1830, at the age of 16. Their relation, General Joseph Palmer of the Palmer family, one time President of the Provincial Congress, friend of John Adams and John Hancock, fought in the American Revolution at Lexington and Concord as well as Bunker (Breed's) Hill, while his son, 1771 Harvard graduate and later quarter master general Joseph Pearse Palmer threw tea into Boston Harbor in the infamous 1773 episode, and joined his father at Lexington and Concord. At least two of Wheeler and Palmer family residences were close by, one at the site of the present Colonial Theater, and the latter at the site of the present Boston Athenaeum, a short walk.
CONDITION: Mvt: Ticks briefly and stops, runs with pressure, train fully wound, good escapement function, will need OH and lubrication, near mint mvt condition overall; dial near mint original, no MFS, minor dings; hands in near mint gold; original medium gauge case with carved band shows little wear, few MFS, no real dents but a number of small dings to the back alone, the initial "ASW" clearly visible in shield; bow original, unworn but loose within pendant; good domed glass crystal.

DATE SOLD: 2014-05-04
LOT#: 1401-453

DESCRIPTION: EPW - Continental gold verge fusee with multicolor gold dial, 44mm, 18K OF original consular case with hunting back, gold fixed cuvette engraved, "Feb 14, 1827," KWKS, solid gold dial with multicolor gold appliqués and applied gold numerals against a stippled field, verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled two-footed balance bridge, s#29433 with matching number inside case-back, together with period cast key, all circa 1820-30. Gross weight of assembled watch 38.3 dwt (59.6 g). An early tag records the family tradition as belonging to "Grandmother Wheeler," with letter from our consignor about the history of this old and very well preserved Boston estate. At least two of Wheeler and Palmer family residences were close by, the former at the site of the Colonial Theater, and the latter at the site of the Boston Athenaeum. The history provided with the watch is filled with clues for more research.
