LOT#: 1502-531

DESCRIPTION: APW - J Waite Fellows, Harlem, NY, English copy of model 1857 Waltham in reduced size, just over 15S at 42.64mm dial plate diameter, sterling silver OF case bearing Birmingham hallmarks for 1892, maker's mark for Alfred Bedford of American Watch Co, Waltham Buildings, Holborn Circus, London, KWKS, signed WE-SSD, side lever escapement with pointed tooth escape wheel in English style, 11-15J, gilt mvt, s#6244. Gross weight of assembled watch 64.2 dwt (99.8 g). Alfred Bedford also worked at the Dennison factory. Only one similar watch has come to light, in the Rockford Time Museum collection, and was sold in 2014 at Bonham's. S#5063 was identified as an English copy of a model 1857 Waltham in 18 size, dated at 1858. The Time Museum Historical Catalogue of American Watches by Donald Hoke shows the same watch pictured on page 303, placing the date at 1874, while noting the engraving similarities with Newark watches and identifying the watch as of that style. Neither catalog shows the hallmarks or casemakers, the stamp "AD" on the pendant perhaps being pendant maker Alfred Denham, active from at least 1855 to 1875, but lacking the dot between the letters. The Bonham's catalog, under the able direction of Jonathan Snellenburg, identifies the Fellows family as jewelers on Maiden Lane, advertising as Fellows & Schell from 1848, and identifies James W Fellows as a springmaker on Maiden Lane listed in the 1859 directory. P von Crum's book, "Silversmiths of New York City" is cited. The reduction in size of the present watch changes the barrel cover shape and placement of the barrel cup screws, but retains the Waltham look. The case appears original, has only one locator pin site, but the location of the hole on the hinged cuvette was expertly changed, probably during production. Fossette Collection.
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, near mint mvt condition overall; dial perfect; hands excellent but lacking the hour pointer; case shows light wear, few MFS, no dents, a few minor dings, ET detail half vanished, but evenly so; bow pivots freely; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Cornell Watch Co, scarce private label for "Jasper Stone, Charlestown, Mass," so signed on dial and mvt, 18S, coin silver OF original case, KWKS, WE-SSD, lever escapement, 15J, gilt mvt marked "Patent" on cock foot, s#13435. Gross weight of assembled watch 93.9 dwt (145.9 g). The Jasper Stone label can be found on Newark and Waltham watches. Stone was born on August 26, 1818, in Weare, New Hampshire, not far from our galleries, and died on December 4, 1892, presumably where he spent his life. He moved to Charlestown by at least 1850, as he shows on the census as a clockmaker in that year. By 1870 the census shows him as a watch repairer, and by 1880, as a jeweler. He was also a silversmith with marking known today. This information comes to us from the free-pages at Ancestry.com.
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, excellent mvt condition overall, minor microspeckle; dial essentially perfect, tiny microflecks at edge and seconds hole; hands excellent, mismatched for style; case shows abundant wear, many MFS, light dents and deeper dings overall to back, very reduced detail; bow was very loose, we tightened it so as not to be lost; glass crystal with light wear and chips. An interesting early watch from the town where the Battle of Bunker Hill occurred, actually the Battle of Breed's Hill, as one endlessly has to explain.

The only references we have found online confirm this company operating as a jeweler as early as the 1870's, occasionally being robbed or going to court, and being commended for finish on medals in international exposition. The company name also shows up in the Elgin private label database. We have not yet found any evidence of the Haas company providing RR inspection services. With key.

PRICE SOLD: $351
