LOT#: 210902-157

DESCRIPTION: APW - Peoria Watch Co, "non-magnetic Watch Co of America" marked mvt, 15J, 18S, gold-filled OF case, very unusual "Paillard non-magnetic Watch Co." marked white enamel DS dial with seconds-register at 9, SW-LS, Paillard's Patent non-magnetic alloy balance and hairspring, nickel damascene, s#37085. An extremely rare dial, this is only the third example of the Paillard non-magnetic dial with seconds-register at 9 which we have encountered. This dial design was meant to allow an open face model movement to be housed in proper orientation within a hunting case style case with the pendant at correct 3 position. This example would benefit greatly cosmetically from a skilled repair of its dial chip.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Illinois, Paillard non-magnetic Watch Co. with very rare American flag dial, 15J, 16S, nickel OF display recase with "Illinois Watch Co. Springfield" marked bezels, white enamel SS dial with magnificent colored flag image above center, SW-LS, Paillard's non-magnetic alloy balance wheel and hairspring, nickel damascene, s#1519446. An iconic and very rare dial, this is only the second example of the Illinois Paillard non-magnetic dial with American flag that we have encountered. The lone other example we have seen was an 18 size double-sunk version which was featured on the front cover of Antiquorum Auction's 2004 sale of American pocket watches.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, plates with mild fine to micro-fine scratches, small patch of abrasion to inner perimeter of train bridge near fourth wheel jewel setting, click with micro-fine scratch striations from sanding, tiny bit of oxide to regulator spring; dial with scattered hls, edge chip mostly under bezel at 4, patched edge chip mostly under bezel near 12; excellent hands; case shows no sign of having held another mvt but our consignor notes it is not the original as he found this mvt without case and paired with the present case himself, consignor further notes that the dial is correct Illinois Getty model material but is somewhat thicker and wider diameter than the typical Getty model dial and that it's somewhat larger size was not compatible with several other non-display cases that were tried, case shows light wear, no dents or dings, good bezel marking detail; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystals but of mismatched edge contours.

DATE SOLD: 2012-09-30
LOT#: 1202-926

DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham Riverside, antimagnetic model 1872 with Presidential presentation, 16S (specialty dimension for model), 18K original Waltham HC, SW-LS, WE-SSD, lever escapement with full white expansion balance (a bimetallic balance in white finish with antimagnetic properties) and white anti-magnetic HS, the balance with both gold & platinum or palladium timing screws, 15J, GJS, quilted pattern NI damascene, s#2981844. The cuvette is engraved, "Presented by the President of the United States to Alexander Bannerman, Third Officer of the British Ship Allanshaw, for his bravery displayed in effecting the rescue of the crew of the American Schooner, Electric Light, at Sea, February 2nd, 1889." Launched in August of 1874, the Allanshaw was a fast iron-hull ship, purchased by the Nourse Line in 1880, and wrecked on Tristan da Cunha in 1893 (source: Wikipedia). The American Schooner, Electric Light, from Bath Maine, was apparently wrecked off Newfoundland in 1889, and a broadside exists citing at least the gallantry of one John Humphreys of the Allanshaw who manned the lifeboat used in rescuing the crew. The one copy of the broadside we have found to date exists at the Centre for Maritime Historical Studies at the University of Exeter in the UK. The Centre's website only briefly mentions this content in listing the item in its library, document X/M/5058. While the date on the cuvette appears to be the date of rescue, which happened near the end of Grover Cleveland's first term, the presentation may well have been by Benjamin Harrison, who took office March 4, 1889 for four years, before Cleveland came back to power for another term. The antimagnetic balance and HS system, according to Greg Steer, who has published a concise article on the web with helpful links to patents, was invented by Paillard, with further developments and patents by O'Hara, Eldredge and Logan at Waltham, based on palladium-copper alloys and other gold and antimagnetic alloys. Steer reproduces an amusing 1888 advertisement from Robbins and Appleton showing Father Time with a Waltham watch atop an electromagnetic induction coil, promoting "Waltham non-magnetic Watches." One may research the variety of original patents from this one article under gregsteer.net.
