DATE SOLD: 2022-09-25
LOT#: 220925-134

DESCRIPTION: APW - new york watch Co, Springfield, very low serial #119 to mvt and case, 19J, 18S, silver OF J. Watson, N.Y. case with eagle hallmark, snap on bezel, white enamel DS dial, KWKS (a key is included with this lot as pictured), fully capped lever escapement, wolf's tooth winding, s#119 with matching serial number within case. The "Springfield" was new york watch Co.'s initial product and known examples extend to serial numbers a bit past 1000. These watches are typically stem-wind with the high majority being stem-set and a smaller portion being keyset. The present example is atypical for being of keywind and keyset form, and a partial disassembly reveals that this movement was machined in the typical manner for stemwind and setting function but given the case of this example having matching serial number and correct form we interpret that this watch was either finished as-seen in its present atypical form lacking some of its SW/SS components and with this case being its original or was converted to this form during the earliest portion of its existence with this case having been purpose-made to suit it.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, upper plates with some scattered spots and fine to micro-fine scratches, dial plate with some scratches around dial pin position near escape wheel, larger winding wheel is missing a tooth but winding function is unaffected, smaller winding wheel with some pitting and evident polishing of its surface, regulator with some oxide; dial with scattered outer chapter hls and fractures, hls within seconds-register, small chip at center of seconds-register, small edge nick under bezel at 6:30; excellent hands, some finish loss to spade of minute, mild bend to tip of minute; case shows little wear, an attractive acquired patina, cuvette with many fine to micro-fine scratches from past key slips, some dings to lower rear perimeter, mild ding above-right of center rear which is more evident to inner surface of lid, scattered small nicks to band, good engine turning detail with some reduction at shoulder; tight bow; thick glass crystal with scattered scratches.
PRICE SOLD: $2,200

[2] United States Watch Co, Marion, NJ, G.A. Read, 7J, OF case shows medium wear, scattered fine scratches and tiny nicks, small shallow dent to rear, uneven white and green cloudy tarnishing, dial with edge flake and small thin chip at 9 and 10, spot of very light edge wear under bezel, few fine surface scratches, mvt with butterfly shaped aperture for viewing escapement action, s#101437. DATE SOLD: 2022-03-10
LOT#: 220310-169

DESCRIPTION: APW - new york watch Co, "Hampden" marked mvt, 11J, 18S, silver drum style OF recase with spring loaded rear, white enamel SS dial, KWKS, combination gilt and nickel damascene finish, s#55191. A scarce and interesting late new york watch Co. product, the "Hampden" grade movement with distinctive combination gilt and nickel finish was advertised by the new york watch Co. in an 1876 price list by retailer J.T. Scott & Co. (an image of this document can be viewed on the NAWCC message board). Examples of this watch we have seen have fallen within the 55001 to 55500 serial range suggesting a possible original production of around 500 made, and the majority of examples of this watch we have seen have had "new york watch Co." signed dials as seen on the present example but a smaller number have had early style "Hampden Watch Co." marked dials suggesting the likelihood that the distribution of this movement grade overlapped the period of the company's name change.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good overall gilt tone though with some scattered haze spots, some scattered micro-fine scratches; dial with small patched chip at upper rim of seconds-register, small patched chip at left perimeter of seconds-register; fine hands with oxide and finish loss; case shows ample wear, a darkened overall patina, some prominent dings to bezel between 4 and 6, some dings and nicks to band and rear perimeter, reduced engraving detail, initials scribed to cuvette; tight bow, push shows ample wear; glass crystal with some scattered short scratches.

LOT#: 211209-239

DESCRIPTION: APW - new york watch Co, Springfield, low serial #524, 19J, 18S, HC model mvt in sidewinder orientation in nickel OF display recase, white enamel DS dial, SW-pin-set, fully capped lever escapement, wolf's tooth winding, s#524. A scarce high grade early watch, the "Springfield" was new york watch Co.'s initial product and known examples extend to serial numbers a bit past 1000. The majority of these watches were stem-setting, and a smaller fraction were keyset. The pin-setting of this example with detent screw at the edge of the main plate is atypical and we suspect is a post-production modification, though we have not disassembled to inspect internally.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, crown wheel missing a single tooth which is not causing any meaningful issue with winding function, plates with few fine to micro-fine scratches, small marring around stem detent screw and setting mechanism detent screw, circular depression around escape jewel setting; dial with scattered hls, numerous scattered small edge chips; nearly mint hands; case shows light wear, scattered small nicks, no dents or dings; tight bow, crown shows light wear; good glass front crystal, clean plastic rear crystal.

LOT#: 210805-143

DESCRIPTION: PW mvt only - new york watch Co, Rail-Way, 15J, 18S, white enamel SS dial, KWKS, nickel damascene, s#57867. A good example of this scarce and desirable top quality full plate grade. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ADDED 7-30-2021: The serial number of this example comes from very near the transition point between new york watch Co. production and Hampden Watch Co. production, and we have seen other "Rail-Way" signed movements in the 57,000s serial range with "new york watch Co." dials as well as examples in this serial range with "Hampden Watch Co." dials. Beyond the dial signatures though we are not aware of a definitive way to distinguish between late new york watch Co. output versus new york watch Co. material which may have been finished and sold by Hampden in their early days. We have chosen to categorize this watch here as new york watch Co. due to its dial signature and us having no particular reason to believe its dial is not the original, but given its serial range at the transition between the companies it is also conceivable that this movement could have been finished and sold by Hampden.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running with some excess escapement noise in dial up position, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some toning and spotting of plate surfaces, oxide to steelwork which is most notable to regulator and to larger polished barrel bridge escutcheon, some gilt loss to regulator assembly; dial with perimeter fractures at 11, hl below seconds-register at 6, very faint hl above seconds-register, few very small edge flakes, some light hand rub within seconds-register; fine hands, seconds-hand with near complete finish loss, minute with finish loss to its tip.
PRICE SOLD: $300

LOT#: 1602-120

DESCRIPTION: APW - E Howard & Co, Boston, s#123, the 23rd watch produced, assembly #15 under cock and repeated twice under dial, the motion wheels each bearing matching assembly #5, very early series I, model 1858-C divided plate (Geller system), N-S (just over 19S), rare, very heavy coin silver OF original or purpose-made "JTS&Co" case with matching serial #123, probably dating from the 1860's and with ET silver cuvette, KWKS, WE-SSD without signature bearing maker's initial "F" on back, lever escapement with upright pallets, 17J, central settings in gold both front and back, dispensing with the setting cup and virgule mount, gilt mvt with variant color as is typical. Our recent accumulated serial and assembly numbers for model 1858 in the lower numbers are s#111-(#11), s#123-(#15), s#137-(#37), s#151-(#61), s#175-(#17), s#209-(#34), s#234-(#59), s#404-(54), s#453-(#93), s#490-(#40) and s#518-(#68), suggesting no dependable pattern below s#300 or so. The present example has the maintaining power spring under the dial operating against a squared screw, rarely seen, but all of the early mvts have the holes pre-drilled and tapped no matter which device is included. Gross weight of assembled watch 113.8 dwt (177.0 g). Among the earliest Howards known, patterns have emerged suggesting that some initial mvts produced may have been set aside for some time before casing and dialing. Several have come to light with cases from the 1860's that follow the tradition of purpose-made cases, carrying the precise number of the mvt. The present example has a retailer's mark seen on early new york watch Co watches, by J T Scott & Co, who state they were "established 1847" and "Jobbers in all American movements and cases." They were located two buildings down from E Howard's New York office on Maiden Lane. Somewhere published is a list of prominent clients of E Howard from the 1880s and J T Scott & Co is listed. (Thank you to Tom Rumpf and Clint Geller for this information regarding the case mark!) This may be the earliest E Howard & Co signed model 1858-C divided plate known, the earlier s#111 being signed by Howard & Rice but with the earliest known E Howard & Co signed dial. We are always eager to hear of others, especially when examined in detail. The cock decoration and markings, as well as barrel plate engraving, are identical for both s#111 and s#123. Howard & Rice was formed after an early bankruptcy of the Waltham venture, making watches with special upright pallet lever escapement from Waltham material. With the inclusion of G P Reed in the next post-Waltham venture, the model 1858 divided plate model was created. We learn something new with each early example we discover.
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, excellent mvt condition overall, typically inconsistent gilding, the gilding within the engraving on the barrel bridge is unusually bright, as if re-gilt at some point but then rubbed away from the plate itself; by comparison, there is minor speckle and etching to the main plate with little gilding remaining; dial plain and perfect; hands of later Howard type, excellent with minor bends; case shows light wear, profuse MFS, no dents or dings; bow tight, thinned and uneven at top; good glass crystal. An historic example.
PRICE SOLD: $10,500

LOT#: 1102-927

DESCRIPTION: APW - Effingham Embree, New York, (listed in Britten's ca 1785) contract English fusee for American market, 56mm, coin silver OF original pair cases bearing London hallmarks for 1794, maker's mark "NTW," KWKS, WED, poker and beetle hands, verge escapement, DES, gilt mvt with pierced & engraved foliate scrolled balance cock, gilt signed and raised dust-cap, s#66043; with apparently original paper (which was concealed under the identically rust-stained silk) for "Charles A Droz, Clock & Watch Maker, No 118 Walnut Street...Philada," the back recording a repair transaction for A(?) G(?) Wood; the rust staining at the site of the latch spring continues onto the case, where it has been partially cleaned out; Charles A Droz was undoubtedly related to Humbert Droz, who moved to Philadelphia from La-Chaux-de-Fonds in the late 18th century; Humbert was the son of the eminent Pierre Jacquet Droz, famous maker of automata
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good escapement function, essentially mint plates show mint gilding, no oxide on steel components; dial replaced at some point, with holes re-drilled in the dial plate; dial has minor edge hls at 10 and minor edge fleck at 9; hands of the period but the hour is very long; original outer case shows very light wear, many MFS, no dents or dings; button latch good although there is some cracking to the button; original inner case shows little wear, few MFS, no dents or dings; bow & pendant original; good domed glass crystal; the watch paper has loss at the site of the once rusting latch spring, matching the stain on the silk that was covering it; curiously, this writer just examined another new york watch this week from 1788 for "Payne Richards" which had the identical dial replacement and chapter decoration; the Ephraim Clark that we sold last May also had its dial replaced; it is always hard to tell if any paper originated with a watch, but the physical evidence is there in this particular example; superb mvt condition
