DATE SOLD: 2022-08-25
LOT#: 220825-181

DESCRIPTION: APW - peoria Watch Co, "M.B. Wright, Standard, N.P.R.R, Kansas City, MO" marked mvt, mvt also marked "Anti-Magnetic" with non-magnetic alloy hairspring, 15J, 18S, gold-filled HC recase with attractive engraving detail including a small idyllic town house scene to rear, "M.B. Wright" marked white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, nickel damascene, s#15000. An interesting private label marking, we suspect the "N.P.R.R." marking is likely railroad associated however the most obvious match to these initials of "Northern Pacific Railroad" does not seem to make sense with a Kansas City location, so we suspect these initials more likely relate to some other railroad which we have not as-yet identified.

DESCRIPTION: APW - peoria Watch Co, "Non-Magnetic Watch Co of America" marked mvt, 15J, 18S, gold-filled OF case, very unusual "Paillard Non-Magnetic Watch Co." marked white enamel DS dial with seconds-register at 9, SW-LS, Paillard's Patent non-magnetic alloy balance and hairspring, nickel damascene, s#37085. An extremely rare dial, this is only the third example of the Paillard Non-Magnetic dial with seconds-register at 9 which we have encountered. This dial design was meant to allow an open face model movement to be housed in proper orientation within a hunting case style case with the pendant at correct 3 position. DESCRIPTION: Straight line lever escapement model, marked "Made by H-V Kyle Feb 1898", measuring 114mm x 68mm, beautifully engraved and chased, escapement with counterpoise, uncut mono-metallic balance wheel, faceted red endstone on balance cock. Comes with a padded box and with an attractive custom-made key that incorporates a gold-plated Indian head cent. H.V. Kyle is mentioned in a July 22nd, 1898 issue of a Fox Lake, Wisconsin periodical titled "The Representative" as having been working "for some weeks" for the local jeweler Murphy Bros. and that additionally "he will attend the Bradley Polytechnic Institute at peoria again this fall." From this it can be inferred that the present escapement model was likely produced during Kyle's time at Bradley the previous season. By 1899, H.V. Kyle is mentioned in "The Jewelers' Circular and Horological Review" as having opened a jewelry store in his home town of Augusta, Wisconsin.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Rockford grade 62, "Russell & Lyon's Railway," private label signature on dial only, 18S, nickel alloy OF SB&B recase, SW-LS, WE-SSD, lever escapement, 17J, Aesthetic style NI damascene with half-florette surrounds, s#416830. Gross weight of assembled watch 108.1 dwt (168.1 g). Russell & Lyons were full service jewelers in Jacksonville, Illinois, a railway hub, their retail business referred to in many ads of the period as a known location, but with limited advertising of their own. The collector who originally researched this stated that they were RR inspectors for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, the Chicago, peoria & St Louis, and other lines. An immediate search confirms Jacksonville as an active hub for the Chicago, peoria & St Louis Railroad, with its varied and complex history and associated line names. We do not know if there is confirmatory evidence of Russell & Lyon as "official" inspectors for any of the many potential railroad lines in that area, and we have not yet found supporting advertising by the company to that effect. But the exsistence of a few surviving examples of this known contract certainly shows that they did market to RR workers and undoubtedly serviced their timepieces, and examples from other US manufacturers show the company name was used on watches for different markets.
CONDITION: Mvt: Ticking sluggishly due to dry oil, excellent mvt condition overall; dial is free of hls but has edge chip at 7 that takes out part of the 35-minute graphic; hands excellent, minor rubbing; case shows light wear, the bezel must have been stuck at one time, as there is a poorly plugged hole in the knurling and other scratches indicating use of a graver to knock the bezel loose; case shows few MFS otherwise, no dents, a few minor back dings, complete detail save for the gouges on the bezel; bow tight, crown shows medium wear; good glass crystal. The bezel plug can be knocked out, the hole opened with a broach, plugged with a nickel hinge pin, cut off, riveted, smoothed, and the detail restored using a screwdriver blade as a punch, a fun little job for those of us who enjoy such work.

Gross weight of assembled watch 98.4 dwt (153.1 g). Jacob Euteneuer, Jr was a watchmaker and jeweler in Havana, Illinois who purchased the business started by Jacob Sr, a watchmaker educated in Paris. Here are excerpts from both obituaries from the Mason County Democrat, contributed to Genealogytrails.com by Deanna Dougherty: "Jacob Euteneuer, Sr, was born in Eberfeld, Germany, Aug 7, 1811, and died at his residence at Havana, Ill, October 3 1891, in his eighty-first year. He learned his trade of watch-maker and jeweler in Paris and possessing considerable means, he invested several thousand dollars in material for jewelers and watch-makers, with the intention to establish a manufacturers supply depot in New York city. His vessel being ship-wrecked and his goods lost, he arrived in New York without means in 1853 and worked at this trade in that city and Connecticut until 1861 when he came to peoria and engaged in business for himself. In 1874 he came to Havana and carried on his business until a fire destroyed both his residence and store several years ago." The same paper, 40 years later, says of Jacob Jr, who passed on March 6, 1931: "Mr Euteneuer was Havana's oldest merchant in point of service. He bought the jewelry business of his father on January 7th 1880, and has been continuously in business in Havana ever since. He learned the jewelry and watch-making business from his father, who was a pioneer in this business in central Illinois, and when Mr. Euteneuer bought the business and embarked for himself, he was a watchmaker and continued at this trade for all these years. He built up good business by his honest dealing and fair trading." Jacob Jr took his own son into business in 1909, two years after this watch was made.

DATE SOLD: 2012-05-06
LOT#: 1201-44

DESCRIPTION: Rare and possibly American lever escapement desk model, the plates in the form of initials, possibly "ICR" or alternate order, the cock originally engraved "Albion" and later "Illinois," in purpose made cloth box from Fey Brothers, peoria, Illinois, club tooth lever escapement and moustache counterpoised pallet of generally Swiss style with Swiss style cock cap, the remainder very much in American Victorian style and engraving, 67mm x 114mm; probably a school piece given its minor flaws discussed below; possibly the initials might be the maker's, or the item was made for a person with such initials
CONDITION: NR - DO NOT WIND - The model is in good shape but does not operate due to some design issues that could be readily corrected, and the absence of the upper bushing jewel; all pivots are "good" but the second wheel and escape wheel pivots are a bit too short to remain in their upper bushings; winding will simply cause the second wheel and escape wheel to shift to the side out of their respective bearings; as well, the second wheel setting pops up easily; one remedy is to jewel and cap the lower pivots to hold the wheels higher, but even there one will want to have the upper settings run a little deeper; otherwise the possibly original cock cap jewel is held under a piece of tape, and the cock bushing jewel is needed; the "Illinois" engraving on the cock foot is crude and after the fact; a very worthy restoration and upgrade project
