DESCRIPTION: APW - Philadelphia Watch Co, 19J, 16S (51.7mm case diameter), heavy 14-18K gold (tested, exhibiting slow fade of 18K solution on stone, no fade of 14K solution) original "F.D & Co." (Francis Dubois & Co. of Maiden Lane, NY) HC with somewhat inaccurate crowned "18" marking, case with attractive leaf engraving detail to upper and lower front and rear, gold cuvette, white enamel SS dial, KWKS (key not included with this lot), fully capped lever escapement with attractive long lever, gold balance jewel disk and distinctive gold cap setting for lever and escape wheel, fishscale pattern nickel damascene, mvt marked "Paulus' Patents," s#1969 with matching serial number within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 81.0 dwt (126.1 g). A good original gold cased example from this early maker. Please note that this watch is listed among our American category due to this maker's collectible interest historically having been greatest among collectors of American watches, but Philadelphia Watch Co. movements are believed to have been substantially made and finished in Switzerland before shipping to the American market.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition, one tooth on the winding ratchet wheel is chipped in half, bright plate tone, some scattered micro-fine scratches, few infinitesimal oxide spots to click and winding ratchet, some small spots and fine scratches to barrel surface; nearly flawless dial with a few spots that appear to be factory imperfections, some ultra-fine scratches; excellent-plus hands, two minuscule spots of oxide to arch of minute hand; case shows medium wear, mild small ding below center of rear and lesser small ding just right of center rear, reduced engraving detail; tight bow, push shows medium wear; good glass crystal.
